Honda's i-SRS airbag - Intelligent airbag

Thursday, October 16th, 2008

Honda has unveiled the world’s first intelligent driver-side airbag. Known as the i-SRS airbag system, the new device continuously stages the volume of gas used to inflate the airbag, which enhances occupant protection while significantly reducing the impact of the airbag.

Developed exclusively by Honda, the i-SRS airbag features a spiral-shaped seam structure and a gas release control valve that controls the deployment and the pressure of the airbag.

This not only allows the airbag to deploy quicker, but also reduces the impact of the airbag on the occupant.

At the same time, the period that the airbag remains inflated is significantly extended, further enhancing occupant protection. It is also effective across a broad range of occupant positions and collision types.

While the maximum airbag volume remains at 60 litres, comparable to conventional systems, the new airbag can have a volume of as little as 30 litres. This contributes to a reduction of 30 percent in occupant impact, while deployment time has decreased to just 0,015 sec for minimum volume.
