The Total Motorshow, held at the Ngong Race Course between August 28 and 30 was a showcase of the some of the latest models from the franchised new motor vehicle dealers. Though the dealers try to bring in the new models from the manufacturer, not all models vroom their way into our showrooms. We take a look at some of the cars we'd have wanted to see and why they were absent.

It was a sunny morning at the Nissan plant in Rosslyn, Pretoria. Our guide, was methodical, detailed and chose his words carefully. Here was the crème d' la crème of the continent's motoring journalists and his words could make or break the brand. "Please don't photograph that just yet," he said, pointing at the Nissan NP200.

Two big events prove that Kenya's motoring scene has come of age. These are the Total Motorshow and Access Kenya Concours d'elegance. And age is a central, unpronounced theme with the two. While the Motorshow showcased what new car dealers have to offer, now and in future, Concours, coming up later this month will be a contest of the oldies; cars and bikes.

Everybody remembers their first car. Actually, their first of everything: First love; first day at work; first pay cheque; first tipple; first kiss....   The novel experience is wired up our veins and subconscious minds.

The first car may have been a hand-me-down lemon, a showroom showpiece with a price tag that can fix Zimbabwe's economy, or a hustler's display of success. Somehow, the first car is a cruel initiation into the realities of owning a car.

It's the tragedy of modern sport. Two is not a winner and three nobody remembers. All competitors want to be number one. So, until he started grabbing wins (two in a row, Australian and Malaysian GP), British driver Jenson Button was relatively out of the headlines.

We love a good fight. Especially if it’s meant to bring out the best among rivals: Boeing-Airbus; Ferrari-Lamborghini; Mercedes-BMW; Novida-Alvaro; Summit-Tusker; and yes, one of the most pronounced in motoring, Subaru-Mitsubishi.

The global economic crisis won’t just leave us alone. Now players in the insurance sector are predicting an increase in premium charges. AIG Kenya Insurance Company Managing Director Japh Olende says the sector could see an increase premium charges as a result of a sharp rise in the cost of imports due to the weakening Kenyan shilling. Olende says escalation in claims due to the high cost of imports of vehicle spare-parts could see the charges on insurance premiums increase by 10 to 20 percent to cover the rising cost.

The police are proposing that motorists who cause fatal roads accidents be jailed for life. The traffic commandant, Aggrey Adoli, says that there is need to change the Traffic Act so that drivers who cause accidents through reckless driving get harsh penalty. “We should think of having the penalties revised so that they are equivalent to when someone commits murder,” he told reporters. The traffic boss went on to say that if adopted, the harsh punishment would not be applied uniformly in all accidents but to reckless drivers only.
